About the author: Growing up, I used my imagination to create make-believe situations to entertain myself. Being one of several children, writing poetry, and short stories was a means of expression. Today, I believe most people are looking for happy endings because so many lives are interruped by hardships and tragedies. This story relates how women during this time had to be strong to survive childbearing and hostile environments and elements, many times being alone for great periods of time. Serenia was taught the same philosophy that she taught her daughter and that her grandson, my father, taught me: "Learn all that you can when you can because you never know when you will need it." I was allowed to learn and do anything that would not bring harm to me or to others. I have tried to pass this philosophy down to my own children and grandchildren. Sincerely, Sherry Watts Morrow
